If you feel the need to slow down the pace a little or if you want to visit some less crowded places in Barcelona the Montjuïc Mountain is a great idea.
There are several ways to get to the Montjuïc mountain. You can either take the metro or the bus to a certain point and walk the rest up or you can walk all the way up. The best metro stops are Paral·lel or Plaça d’Espanya, but you can also take the red line of the Barcelona Bus Turístic that goes all the way up to the top.
If you want to visit entire Spain in just one day and bath yourself in the Spanish soul the Poble Espanyol is the ideal way to do so. You can stroll around the streets or have a drink on one of the terraces on the charming plazas. Or visit the little shops that sell exclusive handmade products. Poble Espanyol is a museum that was built for the World Exposition, to show Spanish architecture and culture on a real life scale. His succes saved it from demolition after the exposition.
In spite of its name, this theater is not actually greek but it was build for the International Exposition in 1929. During summer nights its the perfect place to enjoy an open-air performance. Right now its the perfect place if you are in need of for a zen-moment in crowdy Barcelona.
The first parts of the castle were built in the 17th century and during the 18th century it was renovated to the castle as we know it today. The Montjuïc Castle has a long history as a prison and ad a stronghold during riots and war.
Today it is a historical site with temporary exhibitions programmed throughout the year and a permanent Interpretation Centre that explains the history and development of the castle and the hill. To go to the Montjuïc Castle you can either take the Telefèric to the ultimate top of the mountain or you can do your daily workout by walking up the steep hill. Once you are on the roof of the castle you have a 360º view of Barcelona.
Montjuïc Olympic Ring
Build or renovated in 1992 for the Olympic games the Olympic Ring is still in use today by many locals to do sports and some of the building still host sport or music events. The two swimming pools are publicly accessible, the Piscina Municipal de Montjuïc (with a great view on the city) is only open in summer. The site of the Montjuïc Olympic Ring is also the perfect spot to just sit, enjoy the sun and the beautiful view.
