General activities to do in Barcelona
January is off-peak season for Barcelona; so you should take advantage of the smaller queues! You can: visit the Barcelona Aquarium, go on the Barcelona Bus Turístic as well as visiting the numerous buildings designed by Gaudi. It is recommeded to still pre-book your tickets for larger attractions, such as Sagrada Familia, to avoid disapointment.
Sant Antoni Festival
The festival opens the calendar of celebrations in the city. It starts on the 17th of January and is located in Sant Antoni – Eixample district.
It has the traditional features of a Barcelona Festival – the despertada, cercavila de gegants, correfoc (do not wear valuable items as they may get burnt) . The translations of these are ‘awake’, ‘parade of giants’ and ‘fire-runs’.
Els 3 Tombs
This event occurs on the Saturday following the festival of Sant Antoni Abat. And if this date falls on Saturday, it is postponed the following week
Its main activity is a parade of animals – horses, donkeys, donkeys – horseback riding or carriages, which make a circuit through the city center. The Three Tombs is an occasion in honor of Saint Anthony Abad, patron of domestic animals. The legend explains that if he saw an injured animal, he would heal them. That is why the saint is usually associated with animals.
January Shopping Sales
If you love shopping, Barcelona will be perfect for you in January. On the 7th the sales start, just look out for look for the signs saying Rebaixas (in Catalan) or Rebajas (in Spanish), The sales will be in high street stores as well as local smaller stores.
While January is considered winter for Barcelona, you do not have to worry about it being cold during the day as there are usually clear sunny skies. The temperatures range from 48.2°F – 60°F (9°C – 15°C); it rarely snows either! Be warned, it does get quite cold when the sun sets.
